Fantasy MLS – The Finale

We witnessed Giovinco’s return but it was obvious he needs more fitness improvement. Other than that, game week 33 was a relatively straightforward round. Now to look forward to the last game week and the end of season party.

The Dream Team was dominated by Toronto. GoalMachine remained in Top 5 in the FFF League. Well done to ChorleyRocks and OldGoat with good scores and their progress.

Looking back at GW 33

Philadelphia Union lost at home to Orlando City. The first half ended goalless. In the 59th minute Rivas scored for the visitors. Then the game slowed down again until the last few seconds when Baptista register their second goal. Score: 0-2.

New York Red Bulls managed a lucky win at home against Columbus Crew. The Bulls were awarded a penalty in the 7th minute but Kljestan missed the chance to put them ahead. Grella opened the scoring in the 53rd minute and five minutes later Bradley doubled it. He came back for another one in the 70th minute. The visitors tried to come back in the game with two late goals by Jahn and Afful but it wasn’t enough for the three points. Score: 3-2.

Montreal Impact finished with a draw at home against the Canadian rivals Toronto FC. There was only goal in the first half, which came from Piatti. A few minutes into the second Altidore equalised. Four minutes later Piatti scored his second one. There wasn’t much action for the rest of the game but in the last few minutes Ricketts earned a point for the visitors. Score: 2-2.

D.C. United finished with a fine win at home against revived in the East New York City FC. Mullins, Boswell and Vincent all scored in the first half within minutes of each other. The Blues looked lost for most of the game and their only consolation goal came from the usual suspect David Villa. Score: 3-1.

Chicago Fire won at home against New England Revolution. De Leeuw opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Two minutes before the end of first half Fagundez produced the equaliser. There were two red cards in the second half, with one for Solignac and one for Knighton. The hosts won with a goal from Accam. Score: 2-1.

In the mean time we had two games with goalless scores which spoiled the night. San Jose Earthquakes missed the chance to grab a win against Vancouver Whitecaps. In the other one no surprises here Real Salt Lake could do nothing at home against Sporting Kansas City. Both games Score: 0-0.

Portland Timbers won at home with just a single goal against Colorado Rapids. Adi scored the lone goal in the 35th minute. Four minutes later the hosts had a penalty which Adi missed. Colorado lost the top spot with this defeat. Score: 1-0.

Houston Dynamo lost once again at home to LA Galaxy. They had a few fruitless attempts and missed many chances. LA didn’t look at their best without Keane, but still they were the dominant side. The winning goal came in the 72nd minute from Gordon. Score: 0-1.

FC Dallas went to the top in the East by wining against struggling Seattle Sounders. A few minutes before the end of first half the visitors took the lead with a goal from Lodeiro. The hosts left it late, but goals from Urruti and Ruiz helped secured the win just before the finish of the game. Score: 2-1.

Looking ahead to GW34

We have reached the last GW of the season. This is your final chance to improve your position.

Colorado Rapids (W 15 D 12 L 6 ) vs Houston Dynamo ( W 7 D 12 L 14 )

After three consecutive wins the Rapids lost in Portland. They are still with a chance to win the Supporter’s Shield, providing Dallas lose their final game. Gashi has blanked in the last two outings. After the brace in the previous round Doyle blanked last time around. Badji played just 24 minutes. The best defender in the league Sjoberg is worth keeping.

The Dynamos have the same destiny as Chicago, bottom in the West. I don’t think many managers will have any players left from this team after the free transfers.

LA Galaxy ( W 12 D 15 L 6 ) vs FC Dallas ( W 17 D 8 L 8 )

The Galaxy is third in the Western Conference and can’t go up or down. After three dismal rounds they won last week with just a goal from Gordon. Dos Santos has only registered one assist in the last three games. Keane is still marked as injured.

Dallas reinstated the overall lead and are two points ahead of Colorado. All Diaz has done in the last five games is two assists and now he is injured. Urruti is the only one from this team – if you are brave.

New England Revolution ( W 10 D 9 L 14  ) vs Montreal Impact ( W 11 D 12 L 10 )

The Revs lost to Chicago and have put themselves in a bad position for the play-off. They are just below the red line in the East. The must win and hope that Philadelphia don’t, in order for them to secure that place. Kay Kamara seems to be scoring every other week, but will he this time? The last goal from Nguyen was five weeks ago. No player for me in here.

The Impacts are guaranteed a play-off spot. The team looks a bit shaky at late with two wins, two losses and a draw in the last five. Drogba has turned into a clown with his tantrums. He refused to play because he was put on the bench. Piatti is the one you need, he scored a brace last week.

New York City FC ( W 14 D 9 L 10 ) vs Columbus Crew SC ( W 8 D 12 L 13 )

The Blues lost to DCU after two previous wins. The only player worth having from this team is Villa. He is in great form with five goals and an assist in the last five games.

The Crew has become very inconsistent. Finlay has gone in a black hole with just a single assist in the last five games. Ola missed the last two games with a knee pain.

Orlando City SC ( W 8 D 14 L 11 ) vs D. C. United ( W 11 D 13 L 9 )

Orlando got the three points last week after five winless games. Kaka has totally blanked in the last six games. Larin has done nothing in the last four. This team has the most conceded goals in the league, 58 in total. I am not tempted for any.

DC United is unbeaten in the last six games, which includes four consecutive wins. The problem is that the goals come from different players. If you must have a player from this team, then it should be Neagle with three goals and an assist in the last three games.

Philadelphia Union ( W 11 D 9 L 13 ) vs New York Red Bulls ( W 15 D 9 L 9 )

The Union has not won a game in the last six. If they don’t win here they could be out of the play-offs and replaced by the Revs. Perhaps Pontius can try to help.

The Bulls are on fire with three wins in a row. Most likely you already have the famous duo Bradley and Sacha. BWP is top goal scorer with 23, with one more than Villa. When it comes to assists, Kljestan is the top man with 19 so far.

Seattle Sounders FC ( W 13 D 6 L 14 ) vs Real Salt Lake ( W 12 D 10 L 11 )

The Sounders are still in the play-offs fight. If they don’t win this game they could be out as Kansas and Portland are just one point behind. Lodeiro has become inconsistent of late, and Morris has a total of eight points in the last four games.

Real is with no win in the last six games. This game is a must win for them or they will be out of the play-offs. It looks like Jorales and Plata have gone AWOL, as neither of them has scored or assisted for ages.

Sporting Kansas City ( W 12 D 8 L 13 )  vs San Jose Earthquakes ( W 8 D 14 L 11 )

Kansas is still in the play-offs battle occupying the last spot, but Portland have the same number of points. After scoring in four consecutive games Dwyer blanked in the last one. Benny blanked as well but he had five assists in the previous four games.

The Quakes are out of the play-offs. They have won only once in the last 10 games. Wondolowski scores now and again but I wouldn’t risk him. No players for me.

Toronto FC ( W D L )  vs Chicago Fire ( W D L )

Toronto is third in the Eastern Conference but can move up if NYCFC fail to win. They have four draws and one loss in the last five games. Giovinco finally returned. He played the full 90 but apart from receiving a yellow card did nothing else. The most solid choice is Altidore with two goals and an assist in the last two games.

Chicago won for the first time in seven weeks. They will finish the season bottom in the overall league. Knowing how bad they are on the road, I can’t see them doing much in this game. Good luck to any brave Managers who have any players from this team.

Vancouver Whitecaps ( W 13 D 11 L 9 ) vs Portland Timbers ( W 12 D 8 L 13 )

The Caps have had their worst ever season. They started and finished badly I am not interested in them and doubt that anybody will be.

The Timbers won with a goal from Adi after two losing their previous 2 games. Valeri blanked for second time in a row. The team still have a chance to get into the play-offs but there are many permutations with other teams for that to happen. I don’t think they will manage it.

Captain Projections

1. Giovinco – At home against Chicago.
2. BWP – He wants the Golden Boot.
3. Villa – For the same reason as above.

Notes for your Diary

*Three MLS teams will play on 19/20 of October in the CONCACAF Champions League. They are Portland, Kansas SC and Dallas. Look for news in case of any injures.

*The battle for play-offs is not over yet. Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders , Real Salt Lake and Portland Timbers could all finish anywhere between fourth and seventh after their last games. The other battle for winning the Supporter’s Shield is still ongoing between the two top teams Dallas and Colorado who are two points apart.
Don’t forget about the race for the Golden Boot between BWP and Villa with 23-22.

GoodBYE MLS for now

First before anything else, I want to express my gratitude to OldGoat for his tremendous editing all season. Thanks to ChorleyRocks who finalised and published the articles and for the continuous support and ideas from Secret Zorro.

Thanks to the guys from MLSBOSS for the great weekly podcasts. Reid, Guy, Simon, Jason, Ben and the rest for bringing lots of fun and good advice all season They invited me to join their H2H league with 11 other top experts. Well done to Mito for wining. As a newbie I managed to finish third which I am delighted with.

Another season is over. We went through many stressful and frustrating times but we got through them. This was the second season of MLS for most of us. Last year we had 77 Managers but that number doubled this year.

I was originally dragged into it by Midnightrunner and Secret Zorro. I fell in love so much with this mad game that I started to write weekly articles. It wasn’t easy at times with two days gap between rounds but I got used to the madness of it.

Well done to all managers and especially GoalMachine in Top 5. Next year, we can but hope for a better organised MLS. Better schedules without short breaks between rounds, quicker and more accurate information concerning injured and suspended players. Well, to introduce a Vice Captain, but that is maybe to much to ask for.

So, it is goodbye from me until next March. Thanks to all participants and I hope we are all going to be back for next years MLS, plus many more. Enjoy the rest of the FPL season.
Ivan
