Fantasy MLS Game Week 31 Review and GW 32 Preview

It wasn’t the most exciting start of this long round as most of the popular picks failed us all. Nevertheless things improved slightly in the latter stages. The Dream Team was DCU and Seattle. Quite a few in the FFF League reached and surpassed the 100 points mark. GoalMachine and Gallow are still holding their own in Top 6. Well done to ChorleyRocks and Midnight Runner for their big scores.

Looking back at GW 31

The round started with good win for D.C. United who hosted Columbus Crew. The visitors did little in the first half, while United made a few unsuccessful attempts to open the scoring. All the action happened in the last 20 minutes of the game. Sam scored the first goal in the 71st minute followed by Neagle. The Crew looked helpless and unable to do anything productive. In the last minute of the game Saborio made it three. Score: 3-0.

Montreal Impact won comfortably at home against San Jose Earthquakes. Oduro scored the first goal in the 22nd minute and ten minutes later Piatti got the second. In the second half the guests came back with a goal from Wondolowski. He had another chance three minutes before end but missed a penalty. In the very last second of the game, Venegas made it three with an assist from Piatti. Score: 3-1.

Toronto FC looked awful and only got a point against Orlando City. The entire game was uneventful and Ricketts was sent off with a second yellow card. Score: 0-0.

Seattle Sounders managed somehow to get the three points with a single goal against struggling Chicago Fire. Both teams looked disorientated with the visitors totally lost in the game. The only goal came in the 24th minute from Marshall. Score: 1-0.

New York City had a good win away against struggling Houston Dynamo. The first half went so slow and boring with both teams hardly making any effort. Seven minutes after the start of the second half Villa scored his first goal. The rest of the game continued with the visitors dominating. In the last second Villa scored his second goal. Score: 0-2.

New York Red Bulls won at home against Philadelphia Union to move top of the Eastern. Herbers open the scoring in the 15th minute but Kljestan equalised a minute before the end of the first half. Bradley scored two minutes after the start of the second half. Shortly after that the visitors came back with a goal from Pontius. The wining goal was scored by McCarty ten minutes later. Score: 3-2.

As expected Columbus Crew won comfortably at home against Chicago Fire. The only goal in the first half was from Afful in the 8th minute. Meram scored 5 minutes after the start of the second half and less than 10 minute later Duka hit the third. Score: 3-0.

New England Revolution had a good win against Spotting Kansas City. K. Kamara scored the first goal just four minutes into the game. Dwyer equalised, but later on Ellis was unfortunate with an own goal. Agudelo scored the third for New England to cap a fine win. Score: 3-1.

Toronto FC has dropped down to third after losing at home to D.C. United. Altidore scored the first goal but three minutes later Neagle levelled the match. Just eight minutes into the second half Neagle scored his second goal to win the game. Score: 1-2.

Colorado Rapids won at home by a single goal against Portland Timbers. The first half was quite monotonous and ended goalless. The only goal goal was produced in the 63rd minute by Le Toux. Score: 1-0.

FC Dallas grabbed the three points at home against LA Galaxy. Zimmerman scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the 39th minute. The second half went with many attempts and chances from both sides but with no end result. Score: 1-0.

San Jose Earthquakes won at home by a goal against Real Salt Lake. Dawkins opened the scoring sheet in the 36th minute but just six minutes later Glad equalised. The winning goal for the host came in the 72nd minute scored by Alashe. Score: 2-1.

Orlando City’s dreams of a play-off spot were shattered by Montreal Impact. The first half went goalless with host unable to do anything. Montreal got more motivated in the second half and Oduro scored in the 56th minute the only goal. Score: 0-1.

Vancouver Whitecaps lost again at home as expected to Seattle Sounders. Morales scored in the 25th minute but not long after that Alonso equalised. Morales received a red card shortly after the start of the second half. Evans scored the winner in the 81st minute and then he got a red card as well! Score: 1-2.

Looking ahead to GW 32

This is the shortest round in MLS history! There are just 6 teams taking part in 4 games. To top it up this round is stretched over five days between Saturday and Thursday. The only teams will be playing are –Houston, Colorado, Seattle, Chicago, San Jose and Columbus. Make a note that Colorado and Houston will play twice. Brace yourself and good luck.

Houston Dynamo (W 7 D 11 L 12 ) vs Colorado Rapids (W 12 D 12 L 5 )

After two wins Houston lost again. They are at the very bottom of the Western Conference and with no chance of a play-off place. After this game they will be playing Seattle away. Apart from Alex who blanked in the last two weeks but scored in the previous three, I don’t see much choice. If you are brave enough maybe pick Garcia with nine assists. Manotas was very impressive two weeks ago with his hat-trick.

The Rapids are holding on to the second place in the Western Conference. Both of their fixtures look good against shaky teams. Colorado has some of the best defence in the league. I know Sjoberg or Burch will be in most of the teams. Howard is the best choice for the net. For the midfield it’s a bit of tricky situation. You can try Le Toux who scored last week. Gashi could be called up for Albania, which leaves us with Badji who should play both games.

Seattle Sounders FC (W 13 D 5 L 13 ) vs Houston Dynamo

The Sounders have four consecutive wins. They are now fifth in the Western, and with a game in hand their chance of a play-off place is good. Playing at home against Houston makes it a good pick to have at least two players from this team. Morris will be away to play for USA team and Lodeiro in Uruguay. Jones will be off to Trinidad. So, you need to pick from Alonso, Ivanschitz Marshal and Mears. Many manages already speculating that Lodeiro might play. Uruguay have games on 7th against Venezuela and on 11th vs Bolivia. The team will play on 13th. So, maybe there is slim chance that he will take part. Keep him if you want to take the risk.

The Dynamos already covered above.

Chicago Fire (W 6 D 9 L 15 ) vs Columbus Crew SC (W 7 D 11 L 12 )

Chicago lost both games last week without a single goal. That wasn’t much of a surprise as we all know how poor they are on the road. This time they are at home and maybe a couple of players can be risked. The likes of Accam, Alvarez or De Leeuw could be worth a punt.

The Crew has three wins and two defeats in the last five. The biggest disappointment came from Ola Kamara who played only 21 minutes in the second and blanked in both games. Other good options are Meram and Finlay. Afful and Parkhurst have been generating good bonus points in the last few weeks.

Colorado Rapids vs San Jose Earthquakes(W 7 D 13 L 10 )

The Rapids already covered above.

The Quakes finally won last week, which was their first win in the last eight games. I don’t think they will be lucky in this one. Still with such a little choice you can try Dawkins or Alashe who both did well in the last round. Wondolowski would be a nice choice but he will be called for the USA game.

This is the latest situation with regards to the play-off places –

Definitely IN: LA Galaxy, NYRB, Colorado, Dallas, NYCFC, Toronto.

Definitely OUT: Orlando, Vancouver, Chicago.

Still in the fight: Portland, Seattle, Houston, Philadelphia, DCU, Montreal, Kansas, Portland, RSL, Seattle.

Captain Projections

1. Ola Kamara – Home game against Chicago.

2. Manotas – Two home games and a hat-trick in GW 30.

3. Badji – Watch out this space, Gashi has not been called up yet and if he plays consider him.

4. Hairstone – Attacking defender who scores an assists.

Notes for your Diary/Postscript

Latest news: Remove this:

Many manages already speculating that Lodeiro might play. Uruguay have games on 7th against Venezuela and on 11th vs Bolivia. The team will play on 13th. So, maybe there is slim chance that he will take part. Keep him if you want to take the risk.

And add this:

Lodeiro scored last night but he was booked and suspended for the next game against Columbus. He is coming back.

Gashi could be called up for Albania for the second game against Spain, which leaves us with Badji who should play both games.

Watch out to see who will be away for the international break. Follow the daily updates at

The last two rounds will be normal. The best news is everyone will have unlimited transfers in GW 33. This will be a great chance to fix your team for one last push.

  1. I got 59 pts…what a terrible week…red arrows and red arrows……. Anyway I’m on vacation to my home now for 1 more week before I return to Europe to my workplace…so kind of out of touch :)

This WC looks trickey…. expecting rotations and lack of effort from few teams…
What do you think of COL and DAL? They have no real motivation to play the next 2 rounds.

  2. Ok. So far Keane and Dos Santos plus few other key players are doubtful with injures. I will update all that in the new article. But after all it’s MLS and we could end up with many surprises five minutes before kickoff.
