Fantasy MLS Gameweek 2 Review and Gameweek 3 Preview

Finally we entered the real business. Yes, the competition is now on. New England vs Orlando game was postponed due to weather conditions which left us with 10 games. Nevertheless we witnessed 32 goals compared to the 20 in the opening round when we had 11 games. Well done to Wanton and Gallow with 104 points each and GarthButchers with 115.

Gameweek 2 Review

The round started with Chicago Fire hosting Real Salt Lake. It was a freezing afternoon with -2 C which didn’t stop the hosts. In the 11th minute Nikolic scored the first goal and only four minutes later Alvarez made it two. The visitors called for offside but the video replay confirmed that the decision was right. Score: 2-0.

New York Red Bulls got lucky thanks to another own goal from Colorado Rapids. The Bulls displayed a great attack in almost the entire game. Tim Howard returned after a long absents and looked sharp. Unfortunately in the last minute of the first half Miller scored in his own net. Score: 1-0.

We had a livelier game at the Talen Energy stadium where Philadelphia Union welcomed Toronto FC. The host took possession from the very start. In the 11th minute Simpson opened the scoring. It would have been doubled in the 34th minute but Bedoya missed the penalty. Seconds before the end of the first half Altidore didn’t miss his penalty and levelled the score. In the 71st minute Morrow gave the lead to the guests but two minutes later Sapong equalised. Score: 2-2.

Montreal Impact shared the points with visiting Seattle Sounders. The first half finished with a goal from Mancosu assisted by Piatti. Six minutes after the start of the second half Piatti came back to score one himself. The visitors looked frustrated for most of the game. In the 83rd minute they were given a penalty which was executed by Lodeiro. Just when they thought there will be a repeat of the previous game when they lost to Houston, Bruin found the net in stoppage time. Score: 2-2.

Houston Dynamo won their second game, this time against Columbus Crew. Only two minutes into the game Quioto scored for the host and in the 35th Elis doubled the score. The game went on in favour of Dynamo as the Crew were making numerous mistakes. In the 65th minute Torres extended the score. On the top of that three minutes before the end, Mensah was sent off. The only goal for the visitors came in stoppage time from Ola Kamara. Score: 3-1

Sporting Kansas City couldn’t do a lot at home against FC Dallas. Many of the main players from Dallas were rested and the team went with mostly youngsters. The host thought that was a good news but they did nothing. Even in absence of his partner Zimmerman, Matt Hedges was great at stopping Dom Dwyer. After many yellow cards for both sides the game finished goalless and a point for each team. Score: 0-0.

The first day finished with an exciting game when San Jose Earthquakes welcomed at home Vancouver Whitecaps. It was a quick start from the visitors with a goal from Hurtado in the second minute. The Quakes were shocked when in the 17th minute Mezquida added second goal. Shortly after that everything changed when Ousted received a red card. Wondolowski was quick to capitalised with a goal in the 32nd minute. In the second half the host dominated and scored two more with Lima and Godoy. Score: 3-2

In a cold evening at the Yankee Stadium New York City trashed poor D.C. United. Five new players started for the home team and they all took part in the scoring. Wallace was first in the 8th minute. In the 28th D. Villa doubled the score. Moralez made it three in the 39th minute. The host continued to dominate in the second half and Villa got his brace in the 75th minute. The guests were helpless at all times. Score: 4-0.

It was more like an ice hockey than a football game when Minnesota United  hosted their fellow expansion team Atlanta United. The pitch was frozen and it was snowing. Still, the visitors from the south couldn’t stop scoring. Martinez opened the goals galore in the 3rd minute. Ten minutes later Almiron followed and not long later Martinez had his second. In the 30th minute the host earned a penalty and it was scored by Molino. The visitors continued their mad attack in the second with Almiron completing his brace and Martinez his hattrick. If that wasn’t enough in the closing seconds of the game, Peterson scored the sixth goal. Score: 6-1.

It was another dismal home game for LA Galaxy as they lost to Portland Timbers. The visitors opened the scoring in the 8th minute with Chara. In the 31st minute Van Damme received yellow card and three minutes later a second one to be ejected from the game. All that brought some controversy but that is nothing new as last April De Jong was sent off in the same fixture. The host was lost and couldn’t do anything. Score: 0-1.

Gameweek 3 Preview

New York City FC ( W 1 D 0 L 1 ) vs Montreal Impact ( W 0 D 1 L 1 )

The Blue boys came back with a solid win after their dismal start of the season. We did expected a win but not with that margin. I have the suspicions they will do even better in this home game against the After Drogba team which is still uncoordinated in the game. The only team which had no shot on target in the opener.
My Opinion: If you have Villa keep him. He is a player if missing from your team will give you some nightmares.

The Impacts have always been the dark horse in this tournament. You just don’t know what to expect from them. Blowing hot and cold they still present some danger to many teams.
My Opinion: Players like Piatti, Mancosu, Oduro can surprise us at any time. Possible punt on Piatti for me.

Atlanta United FC ( W 1 D 0 L 1 ) vs Chicago Fire ( W 1 D 1 L 0 )

Atlanta was unlucky to lose the opening game with that own goal but they showed tremendous skill on Sunday. This team spend a lot of cash and it looks like it was worth it. Gerardo Tata Martino know his job and made a fantastic selection.
My Opinion: I would bring Almiron and Martinez. Asad could be considered as well.

Yes, the Fire fighters proved once again that they will be no doormat like last year. Well done to Veljko Paunovic for his excellent selection of players. Earlier I predicted that this team will reach the playoffs and if they keep it up it is very possible.
My Opinion: It’s hard to choose from so many new talents. Starting with Kappelhof who wasn’t used very often last year and Meira. Moving to Alvarez and McCarty who will be missed in NYRB. The new boys Nikolic and Juninho look very promising. And let’s not forget about Accam. I would have at least two of those this week.

Vancouver Whitecaps ( W 0 D 1 L 1 ) vs Toronto FC ( W 0 D 2 L 0 )

The Caps are just repeating the last year story. Simply can’t get it right. A draw at home against the Union and lost away to SJ doesn’t look good. It’s not that surprising taking in account that they lost in 10 away games since last year and failed to score in 8 of them up to now. That red card for Ousted put them in even more dangerous situation.
My Opinion: I had some hopes for them at the start but they have now all gone.

Toronto, the runner ups in last year MLS Cup started the season badly. The biggest enigma remains the most beloved Giovinco who still can’t find his way. It could be his goals opener against Van but many managers already expressing doubts and looking for replacement.Anyway, he left the game at half time with a pain in his leg, we don’t know the extend of the injury yet.
My Opinion: I had Gio for the first week and then removed him. I don’t have intention to bring him back yet at that price. Still, there is a chance that Altidore and Bradley can bounce back soon. Morrow is doing great even if he is a bit pricey for a defender. Cheaper options is Zavaleta and looks quite popular.

D.C. United ( W 0 D 1 L 1 ) vs Columbus Crew SC ( W 0 D 1 L 1 )

United finished fourth last season and now they are second last in the Eastern Conference. They got dismantled by NYCFC and conceded four goals. This team is yet to score. They do have good players like Mullins, Nyarko and DeLeon but no results yet. With a good home record that could be the start of something new.
My Opinion: For now I am staying away from any of these players.

Not the best start for the Crew this season. In contrast of the Fire they are still heading towards the bottom. Meram, Finlay and Ola are still showing some glimpses of hope.
My Opinion: I would sit and wait for some improvement before getting a player from them, too unorganised for me.

Orlando City SC ( W 1 D 0 L 0 ) vs Philadelphia Union ( W0 D 2 L 0 )

The Lions have played just one game due to the cancellation last week. They won that game by one goal. Their talisman Kaka got injured early in the game and he will be out for few weeks.
My Opinion: I can still trust Larin with 14 goals and 3 assists from last year. Barnes is a cheaper option. Spector or Aja could be good in this game.

It looks like Philly is keeping the old style and just likes to draw. The old guys Sapong and Pontius still working hard. I think this team has a future this year.
My Opinion: I am impressed with the new boys Medunjanin, Jones and Onyewu. Last year’s Rosenberry bench fodder looks good as regular starter.

FC Dallas ( W 1 D 1 L 0 ) vs New England Revolution ( W 0 D 0 L 1 )

So far so good for Dallas. They played their first two games away where win and a draw is quite respectable. With Diaz out for a long time the likes of Urruti, Acosta and Hedges still keep the team going.
My Opinion: Guillen might turn to be a cheeky punt and definitely good for the bench at that price.

The Revs had only one game like Orlando. They lost it by 1 goal. Their star player Nguyen got injured. Still K. Kamara and Agudelo are there to curry the team.
My Opinion: With their bad record on the road from last year I will wait.

Sporting Kansas City ( W 0 D 2 L 0 ) vs S J Earthquakes ( W 2 D 0 L 0 )

Kansas had a second goalless draw. They must have been lucky or really strengthened their defence. Saying that they are now undefeated in the last 10 games. Will they manage to do the same again against SJ we can only guess.
My Opinion: Maybe is time to chance Tim Melia with two clean sheets and nine saves it’s not a bad bet. We can add even Jimmy Medranda with 16 points from two games.

The Quakes have shown a good display so far. Just by one goal difference they are sitting comfortably second in the West. Dominic Kinnear has done a good shopping for this season with great new players and good formation.
My Opinion: I will keep Lima and might consider Bernardez. Godoy is definitely staying in my team. Old boy Wondo with a goal and two assists can’t be ignored.

Colorado Rapids ( W 1 D 0 L 1 ) vs Minnesota United FC ( W 0 D 0 L 2 )

It was the fourth game in a row for the Rapids lost on the road. Surprisingly Howard appeared when was still marked injured. That own goal by Miller ruined the game. Nevertheless at home against the newbies looks promising game.
My Opinion: As this team is known with some of the strongest defence around I will bring Watts or Sjoberg back. I need to decide on Badji.

What can we say about the Loons? They lost 5-1 in the opening game and went down 6-1 last week. The only promising player is the ex Orlando player Kevin Molino.
My Opinion: I am definitely not ready for any of those players.11 goals conceded in two games, no thank you.

Real Salt Lake ( W 0 D 1 L 1 ) vs LA Galaxy ( W 0 D 0 L 2 )

Last week Real lost for a seventh time away. In the opening game the defenders contributed to some extend but the rest were awful. With Plata out and Movsisyan looking hopeless I don’t know how will they cope against LA.
My Opinion: I simply can’t think of anyone from this team. There is a future in that new guy Rusnak but is too soon to say.

There is something wrong with the Galaxy this season. They had the privilege of two home games and lost both of them. Not enough yet from the new Alessandrini and very little from Dos Santos. Maybe the team is missing Bruce Arena and the new boss Curt Onalfo needs to get it right before is too late.
My Opinion: Their last year performance on the road wasn’t the best. I might think of replacing GDS and Lledget.

Portland Timbers ( W 2 D 0 L 0 ) vs Houston Dynamo ( W 2 D 0 L 0 )

The Timbers had two out of two wins. Finishing outside the playoffs and with 0 wins away last year now they are top in the West. Their star player Valeri has a goal and two assists already. Olum who is much cheaper worth attention. Of course Adi can’t be ignored with two goals.
My Opinion: I am keeping Valeri for now. Be careful with defence, half are injured.

We can definitely say that the Dynamos are changed team. From finishing bottom in the Western Conference last year now they are sitting second. It looks like the new manager Wilmer Cabrera knows his job. The new boys are doing well.
My Opinion: I would have Alex, he already has three assists in two games compare to the two for the entire last year. Quioto is becoming a must have with a goal in each of the first two games. The same goes for Torres.

Seattle Sounders FC ( W 0 D 1 L 1 ) vs NY Red Bulls ( W 2 D 0 L 0 )

The Sounders struggled to reach a draw in the last minutes. Their first two games were away so that could be the reason. They had a good record at home last year so maybe that will be the first win against NY.
My Opinion: I would have Lodeiro or Alonso in my team. Dempsey looked good in the first game and can score at any time. Stay away from defence.

The Bulls got two out of two thanks to some luck and own goals in both games from their opponents. We still haven’t witness the magic from BWP and Kljestan combo from last year. They do have many good players but have not mould together yet. Maybe that connection from Dax McCarty has left an empty spot.
My Opinion: I would wait and see how long is it going to take before the team gets together. For now I will avoid any players.

Notes for your Diary

Vancouver and Dallas will play midweek in the CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals. That is just few days before their MLS games. Great possibility of rotations.

Deadline: 18.03.17 at 2 PM EDT- 7PM GMT

Good luck to everybody!
