Fantasy MLS Gameweek 23 Review and Gameweek 24 Preview

After some delays and postponements the round was completed with some interesting scores and VAR decisions. We witnessed 23 goals including 2 braces and 8 clean sheets with 4 of them earned by teams on the road.

Gameweek 23 Review

Seattle Sounders extended their unbeaten streak at home beating Sporting Kansas City. The only one and winning goal in the game was produced by Clint Dempsey in the 36th minute assisted by Roldan. Frei had his fourth straight clean sheet 1-0.

Toronto FC cut short the unbeaten away streak of Portland Timbers. The first half went goalless with both sides forced to make substitutions due to injures. In the second Morrow opened the scoring followed by Vasquez and four minutes later Justin returned for his brace. Delgado got the fourth before Valeri scoring the consolation goal a minute before end of regular time. 4-1.

Chicago Fire took the lead against Columbus Crew in the 13th minute with a goal from De Leeuw but five minutes later Manneh equalised. In the 73rd minute Meram scored and Ola Kamara made it three with a penalty kick 3-1.

New York Red Bulls had another great home win, this time against Orlando City. Kaka assisted Rivas in the 13th minute but that was overshadowed by an own goal from Pereira. In the second half Wright-Phillips and Davis added two goals to the visitors misery. In the seventh minute of stoppage time Kaka was given the marching orders for putting his hands over Collin’s mouth, determined by VAR 3-1.

Colorado Rapids managed a draw with FC Dallas. The game ended goalless. The hero was Howard with six saves. The goal from Urruti was disallowed by VAR 0-0.

New England Revolution earned the three points against Vancouver Whitecaps. Both sides were equally playing but Bunbury managed to score in the 53rd minute 1-0.

Philadelphia Union ended goalless at home to Montreal Impact. There was many attempts in the first half which finished with no goals. The action started with a goal by Dzemaili in the 69th minute. He scored another one in added time after Piatti 0-3.

Houston Dynamo remains unbeaten at home shutout against San Jose Earthquakes. Ellis went on the scoreboard in the 21st minute. In the second half Torres couldn’t extend the lead after missing a PK. The visitors continued to struggle with creativity and in the closing stages of the game Sanchez and Manotas added two more 3-0.

Once again the LA Galaxy failed at home, this time against New York City FC. After a goalless first half the visitors took advantage of the host’s poor defence and Lewis and Villa scored to bring the victory. Johnson made five saves in the game 0-2.

After a day of delay due to severe rainstorm and lighting the round finished with D.C United hosting Real salt Lake and once again the men from the Capital failed to win or score. They are now sitting rock bottom in the East and overall table 0-1.

Gameweek 24 Preview

In this round LA Galaxy and Atlanta United are on bye while Chicago Fire and Montreal Impact will be playing twice. Just a gentle warm up before the massive one and another short turnaround with a deadline on Wednesday .

MTL ( W 8 D 6 L 8 ) vs CHI ( W 12 D 5 L 6 )

The Falcons still remain a very difficult team to read this year. After two games slide they won the following two. This surge should be used as a springboard if they are to catch Atlanta and get above the red line. The home record is kind of medium for this season, not massive wins. We can clearly say that Piatti is back in contention with two goals in the last two and with Dzemaili scoring a brace these will be in many teams.
It’s almost two months since the Fire had a win on the road. After the stormy performance before Nikolic has done nothing in the past five weeks.

POR ( W 9 D 7 L 9 ) vs NYRB ( W 12 D 2 L 9 )

When we thought that the Timbers have found some ground they got crashed by Toronto. They like to score goals at home so I can see Valeri who scored in three consecutive games presented in quite few teams. I wouldn’t chance defence here.
The Bulls recovered quickly after the loss to their City rivals and will be dangerous in this one. BWP with five goals in the last four games can’t be ignored.

MTL vs RSL ( W D L )

Montreal covered above.

Real seem to be doing well for their standards. They stay unbeaten in the last six games and finished with a clean sheet in the previous two. After five solid rounds Plata went quiet in the last but him with Silva and Rusnak can always do the damage.

ORL ( W 8 D 6 L 10 ) vs CLB ( W 11 D 2 L 12 )

The Lions are sinking fast with one win in the last ten games. Larin became very inconsistent at late and new boy Dwyer went to have a nose surgery. We have to see what will be the outcome with that controversial VAR decision about Kaka.
After two defeats and a draw the Crew is back on the map with the win over Chicago. Their away record is not the best with only one win in the last five. Both Meram and Kamara have been on and off lately. The team is missing Higuain.

CHI vs TOR ( W 13 D 8 L 3 )

Chicago covered above.

The Reds will come into this on the back of six match unbeaten run. They could do better if start turning those draws into wins. In contrast of the home stats the away ones are not brilliant. They will face a team which is very strong at Toyota Park. Once again Giovinco proved that he can’t justify his price tag this season.

SKC ( W 9 D 10 L 5 ) vs DAL ( W 9 D 8 L 5 )

Sporting failed in Seattle but let’s say that was due to the quick turnaround after playing 120 minutes in the US Open. While their performance on the road remains patchy as ever at home they are excellent. No loss yet and only eight goals allowed brings to mind Melia and co at the back. The rest is up to you.
After three back to back wins the Texans have lost their groove and failed to get the maximum in the last three games. Finishing with a point at home to Colorado was a disappointment. They are unpredictable on the road and might find it difficult to get out something in this match.

COL ( W 6 D 4 L 12 ) vs DCU ( W D L )

This game should be ignored. Two very poor inconsistent teams will be fighting for a point in what looks most likely to be a boring 1-1 draw. I doubt there will be many takers.

VAN ( W 9 D 4 L 9 ) vs HOU ( W 10 D 7 L 7 )

The Caps big win away to Dallas is now a distant memory. After a long three weeks travelling they are back home and might have a chance to get into the top six. Montero could be a punt in this one.
The Dynamo are immaculate at home but that can’t be said when they are away from BBVA Compass stadium. I don’t think they will impress much in this one.

SJ ( W 9 D 5 L 10 ) vs PHI ( W 8 D 5 L 11 )

The Quakes are quite steady at home with only one loss in the season so far even if they don’t score many goals. In contrast the Union have been atrocious on the road. This will be a game of lottery. We need to think hard, should we keep Sapong or not.

NYCFC ( W 13 D 4 L 7 ) vs NE ( W 8 D 5 L 10 )

It has been a long time since the Blues have lost a game at home. They are flying high at the moment and chasing Toronto for the top spot in the East. I took a gamble not to have Villa for one week and that bit me badly. The Golden Boot leader is coming back straight away. On the other hand we have one of the worst travelling teams in the league. Solid win and potential clean sheet for the host in this one.

SEA ( W 10 D 7 L 7 ) vs MIN ( W 6 D 4 L 13 )

The defending Champions are doing it again. They are becoming untouchable in the second part of the season. Four clean sheets in a row is awesome, that’s almost 400 minutes shutout streak. After the brace in the previous round Dempsey scored again to make them 50 in his MLS career. Melia was mentioned above for a potential GK pick but when you see Frei with 36 points in the last four games you think again. The fairytale is likely to continue as the visiting Loons have not won a game away yet and allowed 26 goals during travel.

Captain Suggestions

1. Dzemaili (MTL): Two home games against two not great teams on the road.
2.-Dempsey (SEA): He is on a row, can’t see Minny stopping him.
3. Villa (NYCFC): Golden Boot race leader hosting the easy to penetrate Revs.

Notes for your Diary

NYRB will be playing in Cincinnati on Tuesday in the US Open Cup semi finals before travelling to Portland on Friday. Watch out for injuries and possible rotations.

  1. MLS: Not great for me as Dzemaili(C) punt did not work…..neither De Leew at top…next round a big DGW and again time for some punt. Decided to go against the crowd in (C) picks and at least 1 in attack…..otherwise I have nothing to play for in this season of MLS.
