Fantasy MLS Gameweek 25 Review and Gameweek 26 Preview

It was a big double gameweek in which we saw Toronto rewriting the history with best points per season while LA Galaxy continuing with their biggest slump ever. We witnessed 51 goals including 4 braces. On the darker side 8 red and 66 yellow cards were issued, two missed penalties and two own goals. Many managers went close or crossed that illusive 200 points barrier. The Dream Team was dominated by Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC with Rusnak as outstanding player.

Gameweek 25 Review

D.C. United won for a second time in a row thanks to an own goal, this time against Atlanta United. After two weeks of rest the visitors couldn’t do a lot. The first half was goalless but in the second Parkhurst scored in his own net 1-0.

Columbus Crew won at home against LA Galaxy. It was a drama created by VAR. Early in the game Cole was sent off, three minutes later Dos Santos almost followed him but the ref decided that is a penalty for the host after a video review. The PK was missed by Higuain. Moments later Steres found the net but the goal was disallowed thanks to the VAR again. After all that Kamara and Meram made the score 2-0.

Toronto FC won comfortably against Philadelphia Union. The host extended the unbeaten streak to eight. Giovinco scored his 13th goal in the 10th minute and Hasler made it two before half time. The third one was produced by Altidore 3-0.

FC Dallas managed just a point at home against Houston Dynamo. The guests opened the scoring in the first minute with a goal from Sanchez. That was overshadowed by Akindele and Figueroa. In the second half Urruti extended the lead for the host. It all looked great for Dallas but everything collapsed within fifteen minutes in which Torres scored two goals level the game to 3-3.

Vancouver Whitecaps shared the points with Seattle Sounders. In the 19th minute Lodeiro went up on the scoring board after a penalty kick. In the 60th minute the host was left with 10 men after the sending of Tchani. That didn’t stop Montero four minutes later to score the equaliser Seattle are now on 10 games unbeaten streak 1-1.

Real Salt Lake had a big home win against San Jose Earthquake. The only goal in the first half was scored by Silva. After a second yellow card. Godoy was sent off in the 61st minute. The host reacted quickly and Savarino made it two. After assisting the previous two goals Rusnak netted one himself. The last one came from Yura 4-0.

Portland Timbers took the three point while hosting Colorado Rapids. All action happened in the first half. Valeri scored in the 21st minute and two minutes later Nagbe doubled the lead. Saeid got one for the guests and Guzman missed a penalty 2-1.

New York Red Bulls welcomed in the Hudson River derby New York City FC. That was historical first ever draw between the two sides. The host dominated the first half but neither of the teams could find the net. In the 56th minute Villa found Moralez in the box who gave the lead to the visitors. In the 70th minute Veron scored the equaliser from his first career penalty kick and made the result 1-1.

D.C. United won for a third consecutive time, this time against New England Revolution. Unlike the previous two games in which the wins came from own goals by the opponents this time was real goal. The only goal in the game was scored by Acosta and assisted by Opare in the 71st minute 1-0.

This time Philadelphia Union managed to salvage a point against Atlanta United. The host opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a goal from Alberg and five minutes later Bedoya had one as well. It didn’t take long for the visitors to strike back when Asad found the net. The Union had to play with 10 men for the most of the second half after Yaro was sent off. They desperately tried to keep the three points but Mears managed to produce the equaliser and make it 2-2.

Columbus Crew won for a second time in the week this time against FC Dallas. The first half went goalless but five minutes into the second Ola Kamara scored his second goal of the round. Mensah made it two and the consolation goal came from Zimmerman few minutes later 2-1.

Orlando City lost at home to Vancouver Whitecaps. The visitors took the lead in the 9th minute thanks to an own goal from Redding. In the second half Shea equalised but substitute Larin pulled one back for the host 2-1.

The bad luck for Chicago Fire continued with another home loss, this time against Minnesota United. The visitors took the lead in the first half with Danladi who scored a brace within 10 minutes. The consolation goal came from Accam 1-2.

Real Salt Lake won for a second time in a week, this time against Colorado Rapids. Four minutes before half time Plata put the host on the board and five minutes into the second Silva doubled the score. Real had to play with 10 men for more than half an hour after Acosta was sent off. That didn’t stop Silva to complete his brace and Lennon to add another one. The only goal from the guests was from Gatt 4-1.

Toronto FC visited and ended their old rivals Montreal Impact four game winning streak. The visitors extended their unbeaten run to nine. Giovinco went on the scoring board in the 41st minute. Altidore added a goal in the 52nd minute. Piatti scored his 15th goal in the closing stages of the game but few seconds later Gio completed a brace 1-3.

LA Galaxy suffered another loss in the California Clasico from San Jose Earthquakes. In the last seconds of the first half Kazaishvili gave the lead to the visitors. The bad luck for the host continued when Smith was  sent off in the 57th minute. Urena extended the Quakes lead and at the very end of the game Wondolowski made it three 0-3.

The busy round finished with Seattle Sounders splitting the points with Portland Timbers. All the action happened in the first half when Roldan opened the scoring in the 18th minute and the equaliser from Valeri at the end of it 1-1.

Gameweek 26 Preview

You should be used of this by now. While the rest of the football world is on international break once again MLS decided to keep us entertained. Call it calm after a storm. After the big DGW will be dealing with a big BGW. That’s right, only eight teams participating in this round. Montreal, Chicago, New England, Orlando, Dallas, NYRB, LA and Colorado will be still on the battle field. All four games will be played on the same day with another short turnaround before the next round.

MTL ( W 10 D 6 L 9 ) vs CHI ( W 12 D 5 L 9 )

This is a repeat of the fixture from two weeks ago when the host won 3-0.
After the loss to Toronto the Falcons found themselves below the red line again behind Atlanta with a goal difference. This will be their chance to go back into the playoff position. Piatti with seven goals in the last five games will be must have for this small round.
On the other hand the Fire are in a middle of a big slump. Not long ago they were one of the success stories of the season and lately just can’t find any form. With just one win in the last eight games the team dropped to fourth in the Eastern Conference. The chasing pack are closing on them with every round. Something needs to be done urgently if they want a playoff spot. For the die hard ones Nikolic or Accam.

NE ( W 8 D 5 L 12 ) vs ORL ( W 8 D 7 L 11 )

This will be a battle between two teams with hardly any chance to make the playoffs this year. The Revs are very bad on the road but at home somehow they get by. They will host a team which has just two wins away and only nine goals scored. In fact they are winless in the last seven games. There is no sign of any positive effect yet from the new signing Dwyer. Without any doubt Nguyen will be in many teams. Cropper and a defender could be useful too. With not that many options this week Kei Kamara is an alternative. As for the visitors, Larin will be in Canada, so Kaka and Dwyer might get the nod for this one.

DAL ( W 9 D 9 L 7 ) vs NYRB ( W 12 D 3 L 10 )

A clash between two teams fighting for a survival in the playoff positions in their respective conferences. The Texans are without a win in the last six games. They just can’t keep things tight at the back. The Bulls have been on and off lately. To think of a clean sheet here it will be a push. After a short slide I think BWP and Sacha will come back strong.

LA ( W 6 D 5 L 14 ) vs COL ( W 6 D 4 L 15 )

I wish someone knew the answer to what is happening to the Galaxy this year. Changing manager wasn’t the solution for their disastrous season. Not a single goal in three consecutive home games is kind of a joke. In fact the scoreless streak stands at 331 minutes. Perhaps that is their last chance while hosting the next worst team. Well, in a poor round like this you should let your imagination wild and see what happens. Maybe have another go with Alessandrini. Both Dos Santos brothers are away to Mexico.

Captain Suggestions

  1. Piatti (MTL) Seven goals in the last five games and at home to extinguished Fire.
  2. Nguyen (NE) It’s time for him to come back big.
  3. Wright-Phillips (NYRB) For the same reason as above.

Notes for your Diary

As we know we are in the middle of an international break. Few players from the participating teams are included on this callup list. Check before you make transfers.

There was no fantasy football game I wasn't involved with . This time I am sticking with FPL with two teams plus My Rules. And of course my beloved MLS.

  1. 63 points only, soundly thrashed in the FFF H2H league, by opponent who had both Kamara and Nguyen.

    Piatti captain, was a failure.

I decided against Nguyen, thinking, it is too early after injury return.

      • @IvanTheTerrible I think that the big winners this GW were team fans of the winning teams. Of the 8 teams playing, all have been on losing spirals. Hence anybody looking at the match ups would want to spread out the risk. Fans of LA and NE did very well, both with CS. Chicago scraped by Orlando and the Redbulls couldn’t beat a struggling Dallas club with only 10 men and a 2-0 lead. Next week will be more normal with only 2 DGW on the table. I think that out of the 8 teams playing this week NE and LA will be the teams to watch.

        • @IvanTheTerrible I read an article that talked about how there is so much film out about how Chicago play that everyone knows exactly what they will do. So they must change their tactics. they’re still in 3rd and have a fairly easy run. They should make the playoffs. :idunno:

I hope they do. They were one of the big sensations this season, started so well in contrast of the last seasons. Some immediate action is needed if they want to be in the final six.
I predicted them to be the surprise of the season at the start :fingerscrossed:

  2. @Ivan All punts failed…….. I went without Nguyen, Kamara and Alessandrini ….. :)
Also could not get up to do switcheroo of Lovitz to Long…which would have been good…but anyway who cares. I will continue with my punts every week for rest of the season. Congrats to all who crossed 100 in this crazy round.

MTL looked terrible as I watched 45 minutes…..neither NE, ORL and CHI…none looked good…though they scored…it looked like last boy playing against last but one.

      • @IvanTheTerrible My first draft had Nguyen, Alessandrini, Long and Kamara…..this is quite rare when all you drop, come together to hurt the score. But anyway…now focus on next week….will be a busy one as I won’t be available during the weekend…am going to Hamburg Blue Port festival.
