Fantasy MLS Gameweek 27 Review and Gameweek 28 Preview

Toronto FC secured their playoff place, Valeri broke a record by scoring in seven consecutive games, Colorado picked up their first win on the road for the season, and Atlanta United found a new home the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Yes, another game week over in Fantasy MLS. Compared to other gameweeks there were not that many goals, yet quite few managers still managed to cross the 100 points mark. Unsurprisingly the Dream Team was dominated by Toronto and NYCFC players.

Gameweek 27 Review

New York City welcomed Sporting Kansas City in their first game of the week. Both teams were missing key players due to international duties and injuries. The host was the dominant side and the only goal was scored by Harrison to wrap up the game 1-0.

Chicago Fire managed to earn a point at home against New York Red Bulls. It was a game between two contenders to stay in the playoffs positions. The host looked lost in the first part and BWP was quick to open the scoring in the 8th minute for the Bulls. Later in the 66th minute Nikolic produced the equaliser 1-1.

Toronto FC remain unbeaten at home with a win over San Jose Earthquakes. The home team dominated the entire game. The only goal in the first half came from Vazquez. In the second Altidore had a brace and Osorio extended the lead to 4-0.

New York City FC ended with no points in their second game of the week failing to score against Portland Timbers. The winning goal came in the 44th minute from Valeri. He could have scored again but Johnson stopped him with the save of the season 0-1.

D.C. United failed to win at home against 9 men Orlando City. It was a hectic game which lasted 101 minutes. Larin and Barnes gave the lead to the visitors in the first half. Carrasco and Hines was sent off in the second and Opare scored for the host 1-2.

New England Revolution needed just one goal to take the three points and they did it against Montreal Impact at home. The winner came from Nguyen 1-0.

Minnesota United shared the points with Philadelphia Union. Sapong put the visitors on the scoring board in the 5th minute and five minutes before the end of the second half Finlay came back with the equaliser to level it 1-1.

Colorado Rapids won for a first time on the road this season against Houston Dynamo. The game went goalless but in the last seconds of stoppage time Badji made it 0-1.

Vancouver Whitecaps put on hold Real Salt Lake recent surge for a postseason place. The host took the lead with a goal from Techera but shortly after that Wingert equalised. In the second half Waston and Reynar added two more goals for the home team. Few minutes before the end Beltran scored and the game finished 3-2.

Columbus Crew was held to a draw against Sporting Kansas City. All action happened in the first half when Lobato gave the lead to the guests but Kamara equalised in the last seconds before half time. Many efforts from both sides after that but it ended 1-1.

Atlanta United Christened their new stadium with a solid win against FC Dallas. Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 14th minute. A minute after the start of the second half Martinez doubled the score. Later Garza added the third goal 3-0.

Seattle Sounders left it late to earn a point at home against LA Galaxy. The first half finished with a goal from Zardes assisted by Alessandrini. Five minutes before full time Neagle netted the equaliser with the help from Torres who was sent off later 1-1.

Gameweek 28 Preview

In this round we have four teams on double: Atlanta and Vancouver with two home games and New England and Minnesota with two games on the road. Deadline on Wednesday.

ATL ( W 11 D 6 L 8 ) vs NE ( W 10 D 5 L 12 )

NOTE: This will be the first of three consecutive double game weeks for the Five Stripes. Perhaps the good news is that apart from the last all other five games will be at home. It looked like they are enjoying their new home. With the MTL lost the team reinstated their sixth position in the East. The five upcoming home games will be their chance to have a taste for a first time of the postseason as a anew franchise.

The Revs performance away from Gillette Stadium is just utterly poor. They are the only team in the league with no win on the road. With 28 goals conceded during travel defence doesn’t look attractive. ATL are relevantly good at home and SKC have not lost a game at home yet. That said Nguyen and Kamara can surprise at any time.

VAN ( W 12 D 5 L 9 ) vs MIN ( W 7 D 5 L 14 )

The Caps are on the right path in this crucial time of the season. With three wins and a draw in the last five they are becoming challengers. The problem is that the goals are coming from different players in every game. Montero, Reyna or Techera could be good for this one providing you have a crystal ball to see who is going to score. With two home games against not the best road teams it’s worth trying.

The Loons remain unpredictable as ever. They find it difficult to find the right form on the road. The win away to CHI two weeks ago might give them some inspiration. In an interview Adrian Heath promised that Ramirez will definitely be at least on the bench for this game. Will that help remains to be seen. Danladi is a cheap alternative.

ATL vs ORL ( W 9 D 7 L 12 )

Atlanta covered above.

The Lions had their first win since June but the three points cost them two red cards. For this game they will be without Carrasco and Hines, Kaka won’t take part either due to yellow card accumulation. Will Johnson contributed to the team’s reputation by getting arrested and is suspended till further notice. Larin remains the only attraction and perhaps Dwyer, if can build on his first assist for the new team.

VAN vs CLB ( W 13 D 4 L 12 )

Vancouver covered above.
The Crew are not the best to pick when they are on the road. Only one win in the last ten games and that was against the Loons. Saying that Ola with three goals in each of the last three outings can’t be ignored. The same goes for Meram who can explode against anyone despite being a bit quiet at late.

MTL ( W 10 D 6 L 11 ) vs MIN

After a wonderful run the Falcons have hit the skids in the last few weeks. Three lost games in a row doesn’t look good. Wit a hope that could be the turning point many will bring back the very successful until not long ago duet Piatti and Dzemaili.

Minnesota covered above.

DAL ( W 9 D 10 L 8 ) vs SEA ( W 11 D 10 L 7 )

The season is turning into some kind of a slump for the Texans. It’s now over two months since they have won a game. They are plummeting down the table fast and something needs to be done quickly before they find themselves out of the top six.

The reigning Champions have done nothing more than scoring a single goal in the last three draws. After a good spell both Lodeiro and Dempsey have gone quiet at late. Perhaps this game will help them to bounce back against the out of form host.

CHI ( W 13 D 6 L 9 ) vs DCU ( W 8 D 4 L 16 )

After a long dismal streak with just one win in eight games the Fire is looking to be finding their feet on the ground again. Nikolic scored his first goal in ten games. Was that one off or a return in the chase for Golden Boot we’ll find out in this game. Unless there is an own goal I don’t see a victory for the visitors. Clean sheet is a big possibility in this one. A defender and even Lampson could pay off this week.

After a three rather strange wins the Capital boys went back into their losing mode. It will be a massive surprise if they can do anything in this one.

SKC ( W 10 D 11 L 6 ) vs NE

Sporting are still in the game and it’s looking unlikely not to be in the playoffs. We all know they are struggling on the road but they turned Children’s Mercy Park into a fortress. They have not allowed any team to earn the three points in their own territory yet. Whatever you decide for this one the likes of top GK Melia, Sinovic, Medranda and if you have the cash to splash for Besler or Opara you should not hesitate. Elsewhere Benny or Gerso could be due for some points here.

New England Revolution covered above.

COL ( W 7 D 4 L 16 ) vs NYCFC ( W 15 D 5 L 8 )

After nine games winless streak the Rapids got a victory with a single goal in the last seconds, and first on the road. I am still not ready for any players from this team.

The Blues five game unbeaten streak was cut short at home by Portland. Assuming that was the Villa factor I expect them to be back for revenge. Viera stated that the test was all clear for David and he will be checked at training. He didn’t appear last Saturday but hopefully will start this week. Follow the news on that one and apart from him the usual suspects should be trusted in this match.

RSL ( W 10 D 5 L 14 ) vs POR ( W 12 D 8 L 9 )

This is going to be the hardest game to predict. Real have not lost at home for more than two months. They are on their way to grab a place in the playoffs. Many would say that Rusnak and Plata are equally inconsistent but they are still valuable players.

The Timbers are almost guaranteed postseason involvement and a big chance for the Supporters Shield. Without doubt Valeri is now must have player. He made a single season goal scoring record for his club with goals in seven consecutive games. He is now just two goals short of Villa’s 19 in the Golden Boot race.
Expect few goals from both sides and no clean sheet in this matchup.

LA ( W 7 D 6 L 14 ) vs TOR ( W 17 D 8 L 3 )

The season has not been kind for the Galaxy. There is a glimpse of improvement after a win and a draw but more needs to be done. Dos Santos and Alessandrini will try to help the team which still holds the worst home record and will be hosting the what looks to be unstoppable Toronto FC.

The Reds are now becoming invisible. They are 9 points in front of NYC and miles ahead from the others in the league. Many people consider them as the Cup winner this year and that is not far from the truth with only six games remaining. I am sure as much as he can disappoint at times the Atomic Ant will be in many teams.

With the host’s poor home record expect many red shirts around.

SJ ( W 10 D 6 L 12 ) vs HOU ( W 10 D 8 L 9 )

Both teams have been on a rough patch lately. Taking in account that the host have lost only once ate home and the visitors registered just one win on the road this season still doesn’t make it clear which way this game will go. I might still pick Torres if I decide to choose a player from this lot. The brace against Dallas away looked good.

NYRB ( W 12 D 5 L 10 ) vs PHI ( W 8 D 8 L 12 )

The Bulls are still very much in the battle for a playoff spot. They would have been in a much more comfortable position if they have managed to turn those draws into wins. Nevertheless the visitors have lost their early season groove and the likes of Sapong.

And Medunjanin are seldom mentioned nowadays. The famous tandem BWP and Kljestan look irresistible for this one. The first one scored his 15th goal and still in the race while Sacha celebrated his birthday with another assist to make it 48 in his career.

Captain Suggestions

1. Martinez (ATL) Two home games at the new stadium.

2. BWP (NYRB) At home against one of the worst team on the road.

3. Nikolic (CHI) Time for revival and a brace against DCU.

Notes for your Diary

On the 20th of September is the US Open Cup final between SKC and NYRB. Watch out for possible rotations as some key players could be rested for the game.

Waston is one of those on 4 yellow, if he gets one in the first game you won’t see him again in this round. Better try Parker. Too many NE players at the back, they are not good at all on the road. The same goes for Minny.

  1. Hi Guys,
I’m going to start the DGW with the below team. Can you please give me some advise what to change there to register better result? I’m not sure with Piatti and Vasquez in the middle, but Vasquez is in great form and Piatti will play against Loons…
    Any ideas about possible changes?
