Fantasy MLS Gameweek 28 Review and Gameweek 29 Preview

In MLS we had a high goal scoring round, with 42 goals and 9 clean sheets, yet it was all about Atlanta United: they tied the league record for biggest margin of victory. A less auspicious league record was created by the Revs who went without a shot over 90 minutes: a first of it’s kind! Also in the mix, Martinez scored two hatricks in four days while Valeri became the first ever MLS player to score in eight consecutive games.

Gameweek 28 Review

The round started with a bang. Atlanta United demolished New England Revolution in the second game at their new stadium. Just after a minute from the start Martinez opened the scoring. Then within eight minutes he executed two penalty kicks to complete his hatrick. Walkes made it four before half time, In the mean time the visitors were left with nine men after Kouassi and Delamea received red cards. In the last 20 minutes the host added 3 more goals from Kratz, Asad and Villalba 7-0.

Vancouver Whitecaps had a good night as well while hosting Minnesota United. They took the lead in the 5th minute with a goal from Reyna which was followed by Hurtado. The visitors could do nothing and two minutes before the end Shea scored 3-0.

Atlanta United welcomed Orlando City in their new stadium with a record crowd which was treated to a tremendous game. The visitors took the lead early with a goal from Dwyer which was cancelled by Martinez. Few minutes later Dwyer came back for his second goal. Ten minutes into the second half Martinez scored another one. Once again the guests went ahead this time with a goal from Larin. The host didn’t want to disappoint the crowd and Martinez completed his second for the week hatrick 3-3.

Vancouver Whitecaps also finished with a draw in their second game while hosting Columbus Crew. Montero opened the scoring in the 15th minute but Ola Kamara equalised four minutes later. Manneh scored in the 63rd minute and when the game looked to be over Tchani found the net and earned a point for the Caps 2-2.

Montreal Impact lost at home to Minnesota United. The host took an early lead with Bernier and had a chance to double it but Piatti missed the penalty. Molino didn’t missed his and made it even before half time. Dzemaili reinstated the lead but shortly after that C. Ramirez levelled the score. A minute before the end Danladi made it 2-3.

In a hot Texan night FC Dallas ended in scoreless draw with Seattle Sounders 0-0.

Chicago Fire extended their unbeaten run with a shutout against DC United. The host took the lead in the first half thanks to an own goal by Harkes. In the second half they increased their possession. Vincent and Nikolic from a penalty scored to make it 3-0.

Sporting Kansas City remain unbeaten at home with a win over New England Revolution. The visitors took the lead in the 4th minute but shortly after this were left with ten men when Nemeth was sent off. The home team took advantage and a goal by Fernando and a brace from Rubio earned the three points 3-1.

Colorado Rapids split the points with New York City FC. The Blues went on scoreboard in the 19th minute with a goal from McNamara assisted by Pirlo. They did dominate the game but two minutes before full time Badji levelled the game to 1-1.

Real Salt Lake won at home against Portland Timbers. The only goal in the first half came from Rusnak but at the start of the second Valeri scored his record breaking eighth consecutive goal. The party was spoiled by Savarino who made it 2-1.

Once again LA Galaxy lost at home, this time against Toronto FC. The host didn’t produce a single shot on goal. Moor opened the scoring followed by a brace from Rickets and then Vazquez added one more to finish it 0-4.

San Jose Earthquakes shutout Houston Dynamo to move them below the playoff line. Both sides had equal possession but the winning goal came from Hoesen 1-0.

Gameweek 29 Preview

This is another DGW with four teams playing twice: Atlanta, Toronto, Montreal and LA. The only team with two home fixtures is The Five Stripes. Deadline is again on Wednesday.

ATL ( W 12 D 7 L 8 ) vs LA ( W 7 D 6 L 15 )

No doubt Martinez with third hatrick for the season will be in every single team. He is now averaging a goal or assist every 67.5 minute which is more frequent than D. Villa. Without being a rocker scientist I bet he will be number one captain choice for this round. For the rest you need to figure out do you need more offence or defence.

After some glimpses of hope in the previous two games the Galaxy went back to square one. In short, this is not their season and they probably want to see the end of it.

TOR ( W 18 D 8 L 3 ) vs MTL ( W 10 D 6 L 12 )

It is hard to see that Toronto will be removed from the top of the league. They are now on 11 games unbeaten streak. Giovinco and Altidore didn’t take part in the last game. According to the manager Sebastian was taken out in the SJ game as a precaution due to quad tightness. The same could be said about Jozy with a lower back pain. The Reds have a mixed bag of fixtures this week. After this game they will be travelling to New England where is not easy to win.

The Falcons will be looking for a revenge after the 1-3 loss at home few weeks ago. They haven’t won a game in the last four. With two difficult games on the road will be time for decisions if you are to still trust Piatti or just stick with Dzemaili.

NYCFC ( W 15 D 6 L 8 ) vs HOU ( W 10 D 8 L 10 )

It seems like the absence of Villa and Herrera is a big factor for the Blues. We have to watch for updates of their injuries. Still the team has a good home record and considering the opponent a player could be risked in here.

The Dynamo great start of the season is now a distant history. They have just one win in the last seven games. With only a single win on the road best is to ignore.

NE ( W 10 D 5 L 14 ) vs TOR

The Revs should be relieved coming back home after two disastrous games away conceding 10 goals in them. The trouble is they will host a team which is unstoppable at the moment. I wouldn’t count on defence this time.

DCU ( W 8 D 4 L 17 ) vs SJ ( W 11 D 6 L 12 )

This game is a mess as it stands. The Capital men are useless and the Quakes are just not good on the road. If you don’t have better ideas Wondolowski could get one.

PHI ( W 8 D 9 L 12 ) vs CHI ( W 14 D 6 L 9 )

Philly have not won a game for more than a month. They keep ending with draws. With CHI on the way up I am not sure if Sapong or Medunjanin can do a lot here.

The Fire stormy first half of the season was replaced with a rather dismal midsummer run. There is a sign of revival at late and they still have a chance to catch NYCFC.

CLB ( W 13 D 5 L 12 ) vs NYRB ( W 12 D 6 L 10 )

The Crew are going steady and the playoff should be no problem if they sustain the current form. Ola could be a great bet here with five goals in the last six games.

The Bulls turned up with their B team as expected due to the upcoming Cup Final.

We can’t predict how the final will go but BWP and Kljestan should be considered

MIN ( W 8 D 5 L 15 ) vs DAL ( W 9 D 11 L 8 )

The Loons are still on that seesaw and simply hard to predict how will they perform in the next game. Unlike their fellow new franchise things are not going smooth.

The Texans are still searching for a win in the last two months, nine games to be exact. . The away record is not glamorous and the could stumble in this outing.

RSL ( W 11 D 5 L 14 ) vs SEA ( W 11 D 11 L 7 )

Real are very good at home without a lost game in the last three months. It will be a surprise if someone doesn’t take Rusnak on board. Plata could be useful too.

The Sounders are on a 13 games unbeaten streak. That includes the last four consecutive draws. Lodeiro and Dempsey have gone quiet at late but can’t be excluded. It will be an interesting game with goals from both sides.

VAN ( W 13 D 6 L 9 ) vs COL ( W 7 D 5 L 16 )

Not long ago many wouldn’t see the Caps sitting top in the West but they are now. They picked the right time of the season. Unbeatable in the last six games will inspire them to keep the lead. Montero is on a roll, he should be in your team for this game.

Despite that shocking road win and the last draw the Rapids still don’t look attractive.

SKC ( W 11 D 11 L 6 ) vs LA

We all know that Sporting are not great on the road but when it comes to home games you better think twice. No team has left with a victory from the Children’s Mercy Park in the last 23 games. The team is in the middle of that group where few teams have the same points eager to sneak into the Supporters Shield place. If you are not prepared to gamble with Benny a defender is a must in this game.

Both teams are covered above.

POR ( W 12 D 8 L 10 ) vs ORL ( W 9 D 8 L 12 )

The Timbers slipped the last time around but they are still contenders for the top spot in the West. I am not going to talk much about Valeri and his incredible record because I know he will be stapled in every team. The rest is up to you.

The Lions have left it late but started to show a glimpse of hope. Dwyer finally found his place in the new team with a brace and assist and the combo with Larin who scored in his last three games looks promising. No defence from this one, conceding many goals on the road. Kaka will be returning from suspension, he should be fresh.

Captain Suggestions

  1. Martinez (ATL) Perhaps another hatrick on the horizon.
  2. Vazquez (TOR) If the other two are not back he must run the show.
  3. Almiron (ATL) A second chance. It could be his turn this time.

WEDNESDAY 20.09.17 at 7:30 PM EDT – 00:30 BST

Best of luck to everybody

  1. I knew TOR DEF was a mistake! I got 105points and the top player got 112 points, can I get to #1 at the end of the GW?

      • @IvanTheTerrible Doomed with Alessandrini pick…why the hell I picked him? Don;t have Valeri, he will outscore Alessandrini for sure…

TOR def killed us…did not expect that scoreline….Jackson Hml is last in my bench…can’t use a switcheroo to bring him also.

    • @Terminators i did say to play parker (vanc) over the mtl defender, you were maxed out with atlanta and really no other chance of a cs form the others, maybe toronto but as we see that is a no too, parker was a safe bet against colarado, i did not expect mtl to smash it against toronto tho, that surprised alot of peeps…….105 great score thought great going amigo

  2. Should I bring on,
Danladi (MIN) MID for Osorio MID (TOR)
    and /or
Cabrera (MON) DEF for Mavinga DEF (TOR)

what about Cropper GK (NEW) for Bono GK (TOR) it doesn’t look like Cropper plays though.
