Fantasy MLS Gameweek 29 Review and Gameweeks 30 and 31 Previews

Another exciting round with another record: Patrick Mullins scored the fastest 4 goals in MLS history, within 31 minutes. Valeri extended his record scoring streak to nine straight games. The Dream Team was totally dominated by Atlanta United.

Gameweek 29 Review

Atlanta United had another home win and a clean sheet this time against LA Galaxy. Martinez scored his 17th goal followed by Asad with a brace. All three goals came within seven minutes. The visitors were left with ten men in the 39th minute after Jones was sent off. Shortly after that Almiron added the fourth goal 4-0.

Toronto FC ended their long unbeaten streak with a loss to Montreal Impact. That was the first defeat at BMO Field for the season. In less than 15 minutes Piatti completed a brace and Donadel scored one between. Boldor reduced the lead with an own goal. The second half started with a brace from Jackson-Hamel scored in four minutes. The only answer from the host was Ricketts who found the net twice in two minutes 3-5.

New York City FC hosted Houston Dynamo away from their home. Moralez opened the scoring in the 6th minute but ten minutes later Manotas equalised 1-1.

Toronto FC lost for a second time, this time against New England Revolution away. The game didn’t see much action until the last minutes of the match when within five minutes Nguyen scored and Hasler equalised with Kamara finding the winner 2-1.

D.C. United had the night for themselves destroying San Jose Earthquakes. It was all done single handed by Mullins scoring four goals in the second half 4-0.

Philadelphia Union had a convincing win over Chicago Fire. Pontius scored in both halves while Sapong added the third. The guest managed a goal from Solignac 3-1.

Columbus Crew extended their unbeaten streak while hosting New York Red Bulls. Mensah scored early in the game with BWP levelled it shortly after that. Meram and Williams added two more goals and Veron scored from a penalty 3-2.

Minnesota United demolished FC Dallas at home. The visitors started well with a goal from Akindele who later was sent off and Diaz missed a penalty in the meantime. The host was dominant and goals from Ramirez, Ibarra, Finlay and Danladi made it 4-1.

Real Salt Lake had another home win when hosted Seattle Sounders. After a goalless first half Savarino and Mulholland brought the three points for the host 2-0.

Vancouver Whitecaps remain solid in the race for the top in the West after the win over Colorado Rapids. The host took the lead in the first minutes and Badji got the equaliser before half time. The winning goal came from Reynar 2-1.

Sporting Kansas City had another home win while LA Galaxy another loss. The host dominated from the start and Salloi and Rubio went on the scoring board in the first half. There was just one goal in the second and came from Alessandrini 2-1.

Atlanta United won their second game in the week again with a clean sheet this time against Montreal Impact. Villalba and Larentowicz scored in either half of the game 2-0.

Portland Timbers won comfortably against Orlando City. Valeri scored from the penalty spot followed by Mattocks. He came back to score again in the second half 3-0.

Gameweek 30 Preview

Welcome to this humongous double game week. We are in the final stages of the regular MLS season and no surprises here, we are approaching the end of it with a blast. 16 teams will play twice. Expect many rotations in the process.

ATL ( W 14 D 7 L 8 ) vs PHI /H/ and NE /A/

The Five Stripes continue with their amazing form. They are unbeaten in the last 11 home games and took 14 of the possible 18 points in the last 6. The team moved to third in the East and if they beat Philly on Wednesday they will clinch a place in the playoffs. Almiron left early with an injury in the last game. Martinez is a must.

MTL ( W 11 D 6 L 13 ) vs NYCFC /H/ and COL /A/

After the epic win against Toronto the Falcons failed in the hands of Atlanta. It was a poor performance with only three shots in it, none of them was from Piatti. They are now three points behind the sixth position and can’t afford to lose games. After hosting the Blues they will travel to high altitude to meet the Rapids. Surely Piatti will fight hard and score in both games. Dzemaili will be another favourite here.

NYRB ( W 12 D 6 L 11 ) vs DCU /H/ and /A/ TOR ( W 18 D 8 L 5 )

The Bulls are in something of a rut at the moment. After four consecutive draws they lost last week. These two games will be a challenge for them to remain in the top 6. The first one should be easy on paper before they travel to Toronto where it will be a tougher game. BWP and Kljestan this week could do well.

Well, the Reds lost both games last week. Let’s call it a blip. The absence of Giovinco and Altidore played a big part in that blip. They are still 10 points above the second team in the East and with these two expected back the lead could be extended.

ORL ( W 9 D 8 L 13 ) vs NE /H/ and DAL /H/

After four games on the road the Lions are back at home. They will host the worst travelling team and then Dallas with no win for more than two months. With two home games Larin and Dwyer should be popular picks. Sutter and Toia in defence.

DAL ( W 9 D 11 L 9 ) vs COL /H/ and ORL /A/

The Texans are now on a 10 games winless streak. The last win they had was more than two months ago. Since then the team dropped from a Supporters Shield contender to a fighter for a playoff spot. Hosting Colorado and visiting them in the next round might help to an extend but with the rest will be a hard job.

HOU ( W 10 D 9 L 10 ) vs LA /H/ and /H/ MIN ( W 9 D 5 L 15 )

The Dynamo have no win in the last five games. The great start of the season is now a distant memory. These two home games could help them in the battle for the postseason. Hopefully Torres will get back to his best.

It’s probably a bit too late for the Loons to make the playoffs but the performance in their last two games have been more than impressive. Don’t be surprised if Ramirez and Danladi shine once again, and get another win on the road.

SJ ( W 11 D 6 L 13 ) vs CHI /H/ and /H/ POR ( W 13 D 8 L 10 )

The Quakes are the third team with two home games this week. I still don’t see any outstanding player for both upcoming fixtures. Wondolowski scores now and again. In the last two wins they ended with a clean sheet, perhaps a defender could be useful.

The Timbers recovered quickly from the loss at RSL and are back at second place with one point behind the leader in the West. They will try everything to move to that spot. There are no enough words to describe Valeri’s performance this season and his unstoppable scoring run. He is now top in the Golden Boot race with 20 goals. If you go with a SGW player he is your man.

SEA ( W 11 D 11 L 8 ) vs VAN /H/ and PHI /A/

The Sounders come into these games on the back of four straight draws and a loss. They are struggling to find the groove at late. The good news is that apart from the Philadelphia game the rest of the fixtures are at home. They are good at the CenturyLink Field. Lodeiro or Roldan for this round.

DCU ( W 9 D 4 L 17 ) vs NYRB /A/ and /A/ CLB ( W 14 D 5 L 12 )

Well done to Patrick for these four goals. I still don’t think there will be any rush for any players from this team with two away games.

The Crew are unbeatable in the last seven games. If you fancy a SGW player then go for Ola. With four goals in the last five he is on the ball.

NE ( W 11 D 5 L 14 ) vs ORL /A/ and ATL /H/

The Revs won against the best league team last week. Was that the start of a new era after firing their manager or because the visitors were missing key players is too early to say. We know they are the worst team on the road, the only one with no win. It will be a hard decision to make but Nguyen and Kamara are still producing.

CHI ( W 14 D 6 L 10 ) vs SJ /A/ and NYCFC /H/

The Fire are no longer the dream team from the first part of the season. Four games left and these two look tricky. Nikolic has been utterly inconsistent lately.

COL ( W 7 D 5 L 17 ) vs DAL /A/ and MTL /H/

Not much left for Colorado apart from salvaging home pride. If you are a big gambler then Badji is you man, he scored in each of the last three games.

NYCFC ( W 15 D 7 L 8 ) vs MTL /A/ and CHI /A/

The Blues clinched the playoff spot but need to fight for the second place as they are only four points ahead of Chicago. Their form has dipped lately with just one win in the last five games and only four goals scored in them. A trip to Canada will be the first of three games on the road. David Villa will fight in the Golden Boot race as he is now behind Valeri with one goal less.

PHI ( W 9 D 9 L 12 ) vs ATL /A/ and SEA /H/

Philly finally won a game after six attempts but it might be too late for them to finish in the playoff phase. Pontius and Sapong are the obvious choice but it won’t be easy for neither of them in this two games.

LA ( W 7 D 6 L 17 ) vs HOU /A/ and /H/ RSL ( W D L )

The Galaxy are done for this season. While other teams and players around making records they achieved one as well. In the hall of shame they set a new single-season franchise record for losses. The team has given up 58 goals so far, one less than the newbies Minnesota. Alessandrini had a great goal from a free kick but I doubt many will be taking a gamble with so many other players in this big double gameweek.

VAN ( W 14 D 6 L 9 ) vs SEA /A and /A/ SKC ( W 12 D 11 L 6 )

The Caps are sitting top in the West and that is a tremendous achievement after the dismal start of the season. They are unbeaten in the last seven. It will be a hard job with three road games ahead but they are in good shape and full of confidence. The two new signings Montero and Reyna have brought new inspiration in the team.

Sporting are the only team unbeaten at home this season. They are third with the same points as Portland and with just a point behind their visitors. Expect them to fight hard.

Captain Suggestions

  1. Larin (ORL) Two home games against two very bad teams on the road.
  2. Torres (HOU) For the same reason as above.
  3. Martinez (ATL) His fourth hatrick for the season in the first game.

Gameweek 31 Preview

No surprises here. The rest of the football world is on another international break and once again MLS have decided to amuse us with a BGW. There is just one day gap between the previous and this rounds. 8 teams will play in 5 games. The amusement doesn’t stop here. SKC and MIN will play twice and the round is stretched over 9 days. These are just some prediction but follow the games from the teams in round 30.

ATL vs MIN

These two new franchises have met only once. In round 2 MIN lost at home 1-6. Since then ATL have become much stronger. Expect big home win.

NYRB vs VAN

This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. The host is fighting to stay in the top 6 in the West and the visitors to remain in top 2 in the East.

MIN vs SKC

That will be the third match for the season. MIN won 2-0 at home in May and SKC 3-0 in June. A possible draw.

COL vs DAL

This will be a reverse fixture from the previous round. They have played one game earlier in the year with DAL as a host and the score was 0-0. A repeat of this result is very likely.

HOU vs SKC

First for the season and the reverse fixture to follow in the next round. In the only game between the two teams last year the final result was 3-3.

Notes for your Diary

Make sure to check who has been called up for the international break. Of course expect many rotation with such a short turnaround.
