Gameweeks 18 and 19 Reviews

GW 18

NYCFC won at home against Minnesota United. Goals for the host scored Callens, Harrison and Villa. The consolation goal came from Ramirez 3-1.

Real Salt Lake lost at home to Orlando City by one goal from Johnson 0-1. Chicago Fire trashed Vancouver Whitecaps. Nikolic produced a braces while Alvarez and De Leeuw made it 4-0.

FC Dallas comfortably won their home game against Toronto FC with a brace from Lamah and a goal by Urruti. The only goal from the visitors came from Delgado 3-1.Montreal Impact shutout D.C. United when Dzemaili and Duval scored 2-0.Sporting Kansas City shared the points with Portland Timbers. The goals were scored by Valeri and Salloi. The visitors had a chance to win but Valeri missed a penalty 1-1.

The brace from Villalba was enough for Atlanta United to beat Columbus Crew 0-2.Colorado Rapids was the strongest side at home to Houston Dynamo. Doyle open the scoring and Hairston added a brace. The visitor managed just a goal by Torres 3-1.
Van Damme opened the scoring early for LA Galaxy but San Jose Earthquakes came back strong in the second half with goals from Wondolowski and Salinas 2-1.

Philadelphia Union had a clear win over New England Revolution. With a penalty kick, Sapong opened the scoring early. Ilson and Alberg made the final result 3-0.

GW 19

We experienced a rather unusual round . The established fashion for this season, always go with home players didn’t apply much this time. Five teams won as visitors and the only clean sheet went to Columbus playing on the road. Nevertheless there was no shortage for goals, 49 of them including 4 braces.

Atlanta United continued their winning streak this time against San Jose Earthquake. Thomson gave the lead to the visitors in the second minute of starting. Sarkodie was sent off after a second yellow card. The host took advantage and goals from Carmona, Walkes and a brace by Martinez. Wondolowski scored but that wasn’t enough 4-2.

Minnesota United lost at home to Columbus Crew. The winning goal was scored by Manneh 0-1.

FC Dallas didn’t have a great start when the visiting DC United held the lead for almost the entire first half. All changed in the last minutes of it with goals from Harris and Lamah. In the second Urruti and another one from Lamah added to the score. Brown scored for the guest but the result was 4-2.

Colorado Rapids wasn’t that lucky this time at home against Seattle Sounders. Dempsey started and finished the game with a brace and a goal from Bruin in the middle. The consolation goal for the host came from Badji 1-3. LA Galaxy lost again at home this time against Real Salt Lake. Cole scored in the first and Jamieson in the second but the guests responded to that with goals from Rusnak, Beckerman, Movsisyan, Plata and a brace by Savarino 2-6.

New England Revolution lost their home game against New York Red Bulls. There were three goals in the space of six minutes by Banbury, Wright Phillips and Nguyen. In the second half the Bulls had more possession, the PK from Royer and a goal from Veron brought the victory 2-3. Another team to fail at home was Orlando City to Toronto FC. The visitors had a great night with a goal from Altidore and a brace by Giovinco. The only goal for the host was scored by Rivas 1-3.

Houston Dynamo hardly gave any chance to Montreal Impact. Wenger found the net in the opening minute followed by Alex. Rodriguez added another one and Salazar scored in the last minute the consolation goal 3-1.

Vancouver Whitecaps took the three points against New York City FC. An early goal by Montero was overshadowed by Chanot and Villa. The host came back stronger in the second half with goals from Harvey and Reynar 3-2.Portland Timbers was the more dominant side throughout the game but it couldn’t overcome Chicago Fire. The goals from Adi and Blanco were answered by Alvarez and Vincent 2-2. Sporting Kansas City shared a point each with Philadelphia Union. After a goalless first half, Rubio scored for the host and later Alberg equalised 1-1.

Gameweek 20 Preview

After the summer break MLS is back with a bang. In what seems to be the biggest Double Gameweek so far, there will be 14 teams playing twice and they are: Houston, DCU, Montreal, LA, NYCFC, NYRB, Philadelphia, Portland, RSL, San Jose, Toronto, Vancouver, Minnesota and Seattle.

DCU ( W 5 D 3 L 11 ) vs SEA/A/ and HOU/H/

The Black and Red share the bottom with Minnesota in the overall table. The away record is nothing to be proud of it, lost the last four games. In general I can’t see any players to be risked in a round of so many other options.

HOU ( W 8 D 4 L 7 ) vs MIN/A/ and DCU/A/

Houston is a team with no win on the road this season. With 7 losses and only 6 goals scored away from BBVA Compass Stadium, I doubt there will be a big demand of Torres and Alex both as they are inconsistent. It is possible two draws with very few goals in them.

MTL ( W 5 D 6 L 6 ) vs PHI/H/ and DAL/H/ ( W 8 D 7 L 3 )

The Falcons have won the last three home games. Considering both visiting teams have allowed the least goals away, eight each, we can’t expect many to be scored. No need to say that Dzemaili will be a popular pick. He has a goal or assist in all games involved apart from the last one. Piatti is out with a groin injury.

Dallas can’t match the excellent home record when they play away. Perhaps we have to wait till next week when they return to Toyota Stadium.

LA ( W 6 D 4 L 8 ) vs VAN/H/ and NE/A/ ( W 5 D 5 L 9 )

The Galaxy remains to be the enigma of the season. The best away record while holding the worst one at home. They have failed to win the last five games at StubHub Center conceding at least two goals in four of them. Alessandrini has not been in a great form at late and disappointed many coming off the bench last time.

The Revs are the only team in the East to win on the road. They lost their last two home games but in general not that bad. If not busy with DGW players then Nguyen.

NYCFC ( W 10 D 3 L 6 ) vs TOR/H/ and CHI/H/ ( W 11 D 5 L 3 )

The Citizens back to back winning streak of four was snapped last time. That won’t stop the heavy presence of players in this round with two games at home where they have lost only once. I know Villa and Harrison will be in almost every team. There are plenty of attractive options in defence as well.

Chicago is enjoying this season as no other, the team is on 11 games unbeaten streak. The fact that they have given up very few goals so far can make any teams cautious.

NYRB ( W 8 D 2 L 8 ) vs SJ/H/ and MIN/A/

The Bulls continue to be unpredictable as ever. They keep rotating wins and losses with the occasional draw between. Some managers could be tempted by Wright-Philips but I am not keen with his sporadic performance. Sacha has been unrecognisable lately.

PHI ( W 6 D 5 L 7 ) vs MTL/A/ and CLB/A/ ( W 9 D 1 L 10 )

The Union have failed to win 12 of the last 13 away matches. They have scored and conceded very few goals in them. With the latest hype to go with home games I doubt we’ll see many teams with Medunjanin in them or Pontius.

The Crew recent form has been unpredictable. Most of the time is hard to guess which Columbus team will turn up. Maybe nobody for this week.

POR ( W 7 D 6 L 7 ) vs RSL/H/ and VAN/A/

It will be a mixed bag for the Timbers. They are good at home and have a big chance in the first game. Same time they have been struggling on the road with 13 lost in last 16 games. Nevertheless despite his scattered performances Valeri will be given another chance by many. If you need to save money Blanco is another option. Clean sheets are rare events with Portland and I don’t see any in either of the games.

RSL ( W 6 D 2 L 12 ) vs POR/A/ and SKC/H/ ( W 8 D 8 L 4 )

Real have lost their last seven games away in all competition conceding 25 goals in the run. Don’t be surprised if you see Rusnak in few teams after his goal and two assists in the last game against LA. Plata also scored but it was first in ages.

Sporting are on 18 home games without defeat. On the road is a different story, just two wins and five goals scored this year. I don’t see anyone for this round.

SJ ( W 7 D 5 L 7 ) vs NYRB/A/ and SEA/A/

The Quakes will have the hard task of crossing the country to New York and then doing it again back to Seattle. The team hasn’t got the best away record with six losses and only six goals scored. For the brave ones, Wondo with two goals in the last two.

SEA ( W 6 D 6 L 7 ) vs DCU/H/ and SJ/H/

The Sounders will be well presented in many teams due to the two home games. Starting with Frei and Jones at the back and going with Lodeiro and Dempsey in attack there are plenty of options. The team is not large on scoring goals but the goals allowed are only six at the same time.

TOR ( W 11 D 5 L 3 ) vs NYCFC/A/ and COL/H/ ( W 6 D 1 L 11 )

The Canadians are yet to lose at home this season. The first game is tough to predict but you can count on big win in the second. The big question is whether we say that the Atomic Ant is back and try to dig out all the cash for him compromising elsewhere. If you want to save almost 3m, Altidore could be right here. With a cash to splash Morrow is a good choice but much cheaper, Zavaleta can do the job as well.

The Rapids situation on the road is atrocious. They have lost all seven games so far scoring just two goals. I seriously think we don’t need any players this time.

VAN ( W 7 D 3 L 7 ) vs LA/A/ and POR/H/

After three games without a win, the Caps scraped a victory in the last round. I can’t see any players for these matches unless you want to gamble with Montero or Techera.

MIN ( W 5 D 3 L 11 ) vs HOU/H/ and NYRB/H/

Apart from the dreadful away form the Loons are doing OK at home on paper. Saying that they lost to CLB and drew with VAN in the last two games. The chances to reach the playoffs are next to nothing but there is still time for them to show that they deserve to be in this league. If you don’t have better ideas I will recommend Ramirez.

OLC ( W 8 D 5 L 7 ) vs ATL ( W 9 D 3 L 7 )

With so many teams playing twice this week I am not sure how many will be attracted to players from this two teams. Both sides are levelled on home and away record respectively. The host should do well here but it’s up to you to pick a player if any.

Captain Suggestions

1. David Villa (NYCFC) – Two home games and second in the chase for Golden Boot.
2. Lodeiro (SEA) – Good matchup for both games.
3. Dzemaili (MTL) – In excellent form and again, two home games.
4. Giovinco (TOR) – If you really believe that he is truly back.

Notes for your Diary

  1. Another assist for Jones this game, to go with the two from last game :yahoo:

He must surely have the most in MLS for a defender by now.
