The so called standard or normal round is behind us. It brought surprising scores and few shattered expectations due to 30 goals, including two braces. The Dream Team was a mixture of players with NYRB and Montreal Impact presenting two of each.
Gameweek 16 Review
In a rainy afternoon New York City FC won against Seattle Sounders. The visitors opened the score five minutes before the end of the first half with Roldan. Villa equalised in the 52nd minute from a PK and came back again in the 77th minute 2-1.
Atlanta United won comfortably at home against Columbus Crew. Villalba opened the scoring but shortly after that Higuain equalised for the guest. The host came stronger in the second half and goals from Almiron and Martinez brought the victory 3-1.
Chicago Fire did it again, this time visiting New England Revolution. Early strike from Nikolic gave the lead to Fire. Solignac added a second. After few attempts from the host Delamea managed to score the consolation goal in the 70th minute 2-1.

Orlando City had to share the points at home with Montreal Impact. Garcia opened the score early but not long after Dzemaili levelled it. Rivas made it two for the host. In the second half Piatti scored a brace within two minutes but Spector equalised in last minute 3-3.
Toronto FC extended the home unbeaten streak against D.C. United. The first half went goalless. In the second half, Altidore and Hamilton scored 2-0.The game between San Jose Earthquakes and Sporting Kansas City ended in a scoreless draw. The visitors dominated the first half and had all the shots. The Quakes started better in the second but the five shots were not enough for a win 0-0.
Despite the early goal from Blanco Portland Timbers lost to Colorado Rapids. The host levelled the score in the second half with a goal from Badji. When everything looked to finish even Gordon netted the winning goal in the last minute 2-1.
Real Salt Lake won their home game against Minnesota United and kept a clean sheet. After 12 shots from the host the first half finished goalless. The second continued in the same fashion. Few minutes before the end Movsisyan scored the winner. 1-0.

Two of the top five teams in the West shared a point each when Vancouver Whitecaps hosted FC Dallas. No goals were scored in the first half. Few minutes into the second Urruti scored for the guests. In the 74th minute Techera equalised 1-1.
LA Galaxy finished with a draw at home against Houston Dynamo. Manotas put the visitors in the lead but Boateng made it equal before half time. In the 74th minute, Elis brought Dynamo in front again. Alessandrini scored in stoppage time 2-2.

Philadelphia Union welcomed New York Red Bulls and nothing went according to the plan. The host dominated most of the first half which finished goalless. In the 54th minute Jones was sent off and the Bulls took advantage of the situation. Within five minutes Bradley Wright Phillips scored twice to seal the victory 0-2.
Gameweek 17 Preview
Yes, we are back for another big double gameweek. Eight teams will play twice in this one: D.C. United, LA, Orlando, Portland, Seattle, Atlanta and Minnesota. And that is not all, another short gap between rounds with a deadline on WEDNESDAY.
COL ( W 5 D 1 L 8 ) vs LA/H/ and ATL/A/
After a bad start the Rapids are now on a three games winning streak. It has to be noted that all these games were at home. While last year the team finished second overall, this year has managed to jump second last in the West. The away record doesn’t look good, no win yet and allowed 12 goals in 6 games. They could manage a draw in the first one but there is doubt in the second. With Gashi out injured they will have to rely on Badji and Doyle who are inconsistent.
DCU ( W 4 D 3 L 8 ) vs ATL/H/ and PHI/A/ ( W 4 D 4 L 7 )
The Black and Red are still at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. They failed to score in 6 of the last 7 games. The second game against PHI will be the first of five consecutive on the road. I can’t see any desirable choice from this one.
After a good start of the season Philly is going down at late. The team is now on a three games losing streak. They need to bounce back at Energy Talent Stadium and Sapong might help for that.
LA ( W 5 D 4 L 5 ) vs COL/A/ and SKC/H/ ( W 7 D 6 L 4 )
The Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak to seven games. They are the masters on the road this season scoring 14 goals in 4 wins and a draw compare to 7 goals and 1 win at home. While a clean sheet is a rare event, the attacking power is left to Alessandrini with 7 goals and the same number of assists. We should see the return of Dos Santos from international duty. One of them is recommended.
Sporting has failed to score in 9 of the last 11 away games scoring only 3 goals. The last time we heard about Feilhaber was in round 12 about an assist. No players here.
OLC ( W 7 D 4 L 5 ) vs SEA/A/ and CHI/A/ ( W 9 D 4 L 3 )
The Lions have lost only one game at home but at the same time they have just one away win. This is the only team with two games on the road in the round. The first visit is to SEA, a good team at home and than travel to CHI, a better one at home. All five clean sheets have come at home, be careful with defence. We need to find out how many games Larin will be suspended for. For the brave Kaka is the only option.
The Fire fairytale continues with 9 games unbeaten streak including 7 wins and 2 draws. The team is still to lose at home and has impressive 19 goals scored at Toyota Park. Many managers will ignore the fact that is a DGW and will go for the current top scorer Nikolic with 13 goals. Accam is not to be ignored with 7 goals and 5 assists. Bastian remains a bonus points magnet. The defence at home is doing very well.
POR ( W 7 D 3 L 6 ) vs MIN/A/ and SEA/H/
The Timbers have lost the last four away games. At home they have much better performance. With only three clean sheets I wouldn’t rush for any defence here. Without saying Valeri will be popular in this round. He has 8 goals and 6 assists and he likes scoring braces at home. Adi, Blanco and Guzman should do well in both games.

SEA ( W 5 D 4 L 7 ) vs OLC/H/ and POR/A/
The Sounders are slightly better at home and awful away. Quite frankly I can’t see any fireworks from them in both games. They have not won a game against a team from the East since last August. Lost the last four games scoring just twice. The last time Lodeiro register a goal was back in round 9 against NE at home. No players here.
ATL ( W 6 D 3 L 6 ) vs DCU/A/ and COL/H/
The Five Stripes are enjoying their inaugural season. They score goals at home and away but concede quite few on the road. Considering the two opponents I can see a heavy presence of Martinez, Almiron or Villalba. There is possibility for at least one clean sheet so Kann is an option.

MIN ( W 4 D 2 L 9 ) vs POR/H/ and VAN/H/ ( W 6 D 2 L 6 )
Minny has failed to win in the last 8 away games conceding at least two goals in 6 of them. Maybe now is the chance for them to make some points and move up, the only team with two home games this week. With not much choice around perhaps Molino or Ramirez could be a good idea. The have kept 3 CS at home, so Calvo looks good.
The Caps are up and down as usual. The question is can they be trusted away when they only have two wins? If you don’t have better ideas, Montero could be chanced.
TOR ( W 9 D 5 L 2 ) vs NE ( W 5 D 5 L 6 )
The Reds have won their last 6 home games scoring at least 2 goals in each of them. The expectations of a stormy Gio didn’t materialise, two assists was the consolation. Judging the opponent away record a defender might be useful in this one.
Near post run to perfection ????
— Toronto FC (@torontofc) June 18, 2017
The Revs unbeaten 11 home games streak was snapped by Chicago. Their stats on the road are awful and remain one of the few teams without a win. Nguyen is not afraid to score away from home and if you are not busy with DGW players, he looks a good bet.
HOU ( W 7 D 3 L 6 ) vs DAL( W 6 D 6 L 3 )
The old Texas Derby. This is one of the most unpredictable. In 34 games Dynamo has won 12 and Dallas has 13 plus 9 draws. Each of the teams have 49 goals scored. Both teams are on 24 points in the packed top four Western Conference separated by a goal difference. Both sides are coming on the back of draws. Dynamo has not lost a game at BBVA Compass Stadium. That said, Dallas has conceded only 7 goals on the road. It will be just guessing to predict the score or who is going to score in this game.
NYRB ( W D L ) vs NYCFC ( W 8 D 3 L 5 )
The Hudson Derby is back. These teams have met seven times with the Bulls winning six times scoring 18 goals ( BWP was involved in 8 of them ) and the City boys with one win and just 5 goals in total. In the first derby last year NYRB won 7-0 as visitors. That said, we are talking about different times. The times when BWP and Kljestan used to fire on all cylinders, that is not the case this season. David Villa is getting better with his age. He is on 10 goals and 6 assists ( last week scored his 50th and 51st MLS goals ) compared to 8 goals from BWP who just warmed up with brace in the last game. Bradley was top in the Golden Boot race last year with 23 goals and Kljestan with 24 assists. It will be a close result but like in the Texan derby, it’s hard to predict where the goals will come from.
CLB ( W 7 D 1 L 9 ) vs MTL ( W 4 D 6 L 4 )
The Crew would like to extend their good home record. Yes they are good at the Mapfre Stadium as compared on the road with most conceded goals in the East. Meram scored a hatrick against MTL at Saputo Stadium in round 11, will he repeat that?
The Falcons have only one win on the road but at the same time just two losses. They like to draw in these events. The only one who can prevent CLB having it’s own way is Piatti coming fresh on the back of a brace. The most popular bench fodder Tabla was out with some mysterious undisclosed injury last week.
SJ ( W 5 D 5 L 6 ) vs RSL ( W 5 D 2 L 10 )
The Quakes don’t posses the greatest home record with only 3 wins in 8.Wondolowski failed to score at home last week as he did in the previous four games at Avaya Stadium. Bingham could be in for a clean sheet in this one.
Real has only one win on the road and has conceded staggering 26 goals, more than any team in the league. Rusnak is still away involved in UEFA U 21 Championship. Whichever way you look at it will be a strange game and best is to avoid.
1. Alessandrini– In good form lately. A possible brace in the second game.
2. Valeri (POR)- Very good at home.
3. Martinez (ATL)- Good matchup.
4. Meram (CLB)- At home against not so good road team.
5. Nikolic (CHI)- He always scores at home.
Notes for your Diary
The first leg of the Canadian Championship is on the 21st of June. Montreal Impact will host Toronto FC. Watch out for injuries and expect rotations in the upcoming games.
